Guarana is a fast growing perennial shrub native to Brazil and other wooded regions of the Amazon. The plant yields a reddish colored fruit which contains seeds that are harvested, dry roasted and made into a paste. The Indigenous tribes have used guarana mainly as a stimulant, astringent and in treating chronic diarrhea.

It is a stimulant with several times the caffeine level of coffee. The effect of the caffeine in Guarana results in an energy boost and in appetite suppression. It is reputed to increase mental alertness, fight fatigue and to increase stamina and physical endurance. Athletes in the United States are using it as a natural aid for maintaining peak performance. It also returns the energy level back to normal after exercise. The health food industry also promotes Guarana as an aid to smoking cessation.

In Brazil Guarana is taken daily as a health tonic by millions who believe it helps overcome heat fatigue, combats premature aging, detoxifies the blood and is useful for obesity, dyspepsia, and for arteriosclerosis.
